This might mean wearing my favourite colour (presumable Santa's too) bright red, or wearing my favourite very gawdy and gay gold brocade Trelise Cooper pants.

This year to feed my current Mad Men styling obsession I might opt for one of my new red 50's frocks.

My cousin and his friends and family used to all go to the Salvation army and spend $10 on each other (like a secret Santa) and you had to wear the outfit that had been chosen for you all day – everywhere you went! I love that idea. What hilarity! Talk about being the season to be merry! They would have made merriness everywhere they went!

Whatever I choose from my wardrobe in the morning it will be comfortable. I will need to be able to eat an enormous amount of food, hug relatives, hopefully dance, take naps and travel comfortably in a car, and most importantly feel fabulously joyful while doing it all.

For me, the Christmas spirit (boiled down to its simplest form) is about joy. Feeling joy, being joy, sharing joy and spreading joy. So when you are getting dressed this morning, don't reach for 'the usual suspects' – choose something that is full of joy for you. It might be a pair of treasured earrings, a family heirloom pendant, a $2 shop brooch, your most extravagant party dress, or a favourite pair of shoes, or even your 'good' jandals (don't laugh – I have a pair). Maybe it's a necklace that the kids made for Mothers Day at school, or maybe it's that skirt that you wore to that wedding that time and have never had an occasion to wear since. Make today an occasion.

Then when you collapse gracefully and elegantly (or otherwise) at the end of this exciting and exhausting day you'll feel joyful, triumphant and grateful that you made it through the day! Another Christmas Miracle.

Ps: Check out who I just caught a glimpse of (blogging at 1:30am has it's benefits):
